Skull
Fine and rare 18K gold, enamel and diamond verge and fusee skull watch circa 1810.
Realistically modeled skull enameled overall (beautifully restored in hard enamel),
ariculated jaw, the eyes and teeth set with diamonds. The top of the
skull spring hinged to reveal the white enamel dial with blued steel hands.
The bottom with a glazed aperture over the balance cock. The movement is a
replacement but it is contemporary with the case.
Another commonly known term for this type of watch is "momento
mori", rememberance of death, with a deeply religious
connotation.
