Quare & Horseman
Quare & Horseman 20K gold and shagreen quarter hour repeater English
antique pocket watch circa 1718.
Cherished early watches were often "modernized" around 1800 with and enamel
dial replacing the 'old fashioned' silver or gold ones! This watch has such a
replacement dial with appropriate later hands. The outer gilt and shagreen case with
typical losses and repairs. Pierced, engraved and engine turned inner case has been
purpose made, perhaps at the same time as the replacement dial. The movement with
gilt dust cover, fine large pierced and engraved
balance cock with streamers, the foot and regulator plate also pierced and engraved.
Repeating on a bell with loud, clear tone.
Daniel Quare was one of the most celebrated of English watchmakers and the inventor of
repeating work for watches. Horseman joined the firm in 1718.
