Fine French 18K gold dumb quarter hour repeater by Hilger, Paris circa 1780.
Fine white enamel dial (repaired chip at winding hole) with black markings and fancy gold
hands. Substantial plain polish case with bright work engraving on the bezel and
plunger pendant to activate the repeater. Gilt full plate verge and fusee movement
with unusual dust ring and large beautifully pierced and engraved balance cock.
When activated this watch taps out the hours and quarters on the inside of the case. Dumb
repeaters did not use bells which were thought by some to be ostentatious and could also
disturb others at performances or social gatherings.
