Josiah Emery (1725 to 1794), a Swiss who settled in London in the early 1760's, is famous for
his work on the development of early precision timekeepers. This unusual timepiece looks a
lot like early marine timekeepers. It is made with his characteristic fine workmanship and
reflects his acquaintance with Earnshaw, Mudge and Arnold who also worked on early
precision timekeepers. His workshop continued to produce timepieces with conventional
escapements while Emery worked on the lever escapement and submitted his products to the
Board of Longitude.
