The case back fully restored in hard enamel. The edges, front and back, are decorated with
floral bouquets. White enamel dial with bold black numerals and beautiful fancy gold hands.
The movement with large and beautifully pierced and engraved balance cock.
Ferdinand Berthoud was born in Switzerland. After his apprenticeship with his
brother, Jean-Henri, he set up a clockmaking business in Paris in 1745 and gained
a great reputation for the excellence and accuracy of his marine chronometers.
He was appointed Clockmaker to the Navy in 1762 and Clockmaker to the King
in 1773
